Book Review - Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, By Peter Scazzero
Peter Scazzero pastored a growing church in New York City. He tells the story of how his personal life and his church all seemed to unravel at the same time. This book is about the journey to become more mature spiritually as we become emotionally healthy. This is one of the best books that Ellen and I have read in the last two years.
Here is the underlying principle of this book – “it’s impossible to be spiritually mature, while remaining emotionally immature”. Scazzero first explores the problem of emotionally unhealthy spirituality and then moves on to the pathway to emotionally healthy spirituality. Scazzero says that “very few people have a conscious plan for developing their spiritual lives”. One of the Biblical stories that Scazzero uses is the life of Daniel as an example of developing a “rule of life” that results in emotionally healthy spirituality.
This book that Ellen and I have shared and read together is full of underlines and notes and folded page corners. It has been tremendously meaningful to us on our journey to be more like Jesus. We highly recommend it to all.
